Tolo News : (طلوع‌نیوز), depicted as TOLOnews, stands as a prominent Afghan news channel and online platform headquartered in Kabul. Launched in August 2010 by the Moby Media Group, it holds the distinction of being Afghanistan's inaugural 24-hour news channel.

Accessible via terrestrial television throughout Afghanistan and globally through satellite and the internet, TOLOnews caters to audiences in Dari, Pashto, and English. The main studio is situated in Kabul, with sister channels TOLO and Lemar complementing its media presence.

History

Established in August 2010 as an adjunct to TOLO, TOLOnews focuses exclusively on local, national, and international news coverage. As of August 2021, the channel is under the ownership of Afghan Australian businessman Saad Mohseni. Lotfullah Najafizada served as the Director of News from 2010 to 2021 and received recognition as a Press Freedom Hero by Reporters Without Borders in 2016 for his contributions.

Notably, TOLOnews gained international attention following the fall of Kabul on August 15, 2021, and the subsequent establishment of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. A distinctive moment arose when a Taliban spokesman was interviewed by a female journalist on TOLOnews, underscoring the channel's commitment to journalistic integrity.

Despite challenges and incidents, including the assault of a TOLOnews cameraman by Taliban soldiers in August 2021 and the storming of TOLOnews' Kabul studio in March 2022 by Taliban gunmen, the channel continues to broadcast. The latter incident occurred in response to TOLOnews' coverage of the Taliban's decision to ban foreign television shows, deemed offensive to the "religious sentiments" of the country. Notably, the resilience of TOLOnews has been exemplified by its determination to continue operations, even considering relocation to the Middle East or Europe if faced with obstruction from the Taliban in Afghanistan.
